Kaitaki is a Māori word meaning "challenger". With the capacity to carry up to 1600 passengers, it is both the largest ship in Interislander's fleet and the largest ferry operating in New Zealand waters. With four passenger decks, two restaurants, a sports bar, shop, cabins, nurseries, an abundance of lounges and a deck dedicated to children, Kaitaki feels more like a cruise ship than a ferry. Here's a rundown of what's on-board:
The Lookout Lounge is a spectacular spot. Located on Deck 8, the Lookout Lounge conservatory spans two levels with floor to ceiling glass. The Local Heroes Bar is conveniently located next door and it has its own toilets on the mezzanine level.
Hector's café is located on Deck 7 towards the front of the ship. Hector's is a modern, elegant café modelled on the classic Kiwi café-bar style. If you are hankering for a delicious slice of cake or an invigorating coffee, then Hector's is the place to go.

Why not take the time to settle down and watch a movie? Or, send the kids off to watch one while you sit back and relax! Kaitaki has two cinemas on Deck 2. The titles are chosen daily and information, tickets and popcorn are obtained from the shop on Deck 7
Whether you need a nice warm jacket, a cool new t-shirt, an authentic pounamu or some entertainment for the kids, you will find it all in our mini emporium on Deck 7. We also have a range of Interislander souvenirs and memorabilia.

Outdoor Viewing Decks
The journey through the Sounds is simply gorgeous. On an overcast day, the hills are a picture of dramatic beauty. On a sunny day, they are like nothing else on earth. So pop outside on Deck 7 or grab an outdoor seat on Deck 10 and soak up the scenery.
Our cabins are a great space for young families to sleep. Each cabin has 2 bunks and an ensuite bathroom with shower. Cabins are few in number and high in demand, so call the bookings desk to try and reserve one if you are interested.
If you are sailing with little-ones who need their nap-time, then you will find four nursery rooms with changing facilities and toilets on board Kaitaki. They are located on Deck 7 towards the rear of the ship and are free to use.
Children's Play Area
Deck 2 is dedicated to young ones aged 0 to 10 years. Down there you will find a huge soft play climbing frame, baby play area and two cinemas. There is also a café on a mezzanine level overlooking the play area for adults to sit and relax!
Children's TV Area
Everyone needs a bit of down time and especially kids. For this reason, we have a TV lounge for young ones that is dedicated to the disney channel. The lounge is located on Deck 7 next to the shop and is used for magic shows during the summer.
