Hilux Rural Games Palmerston North

Hilux New Zealand Rural Games
Palmerston North: 11-12 March 2017

The Hilux New Zealand Rural Games are coming to Palmerston North! The two-day celebration of ‘sports that built the nation' is completely free to enter and takes place on The Square, right in the heart of the city, on Saturday 11 and Sunday 12 March 2017.

The Games feature exciting national and trans-Tasman championships for traditional sports including speed shearing, fencing and tree climbing against the clock plus sheep dog trials and ANZAXE wood chopping.

Kilted warriors battle in a number of gut-busting Highland Games ‘heavy' events and professional cricketers, softballers and baseballers will be having a crack at the world egg throwing and catching record.

Get stuck in and have a go yourself at fun events like gumboot throwing, wine barrel racing, speed milking, cowpat tossing, hay stacking and heaps more. Just turn up and you might end up a national champion!

This year Interislander is sponsoring a brand new horse gearing-up event on the Saturday. Head along to watch top local trainers and drivers vie for the title and then put your own harnessing skills to the test!

Kids ‘n Country is a series of fun events on both days especially for children aged 12 and under. Stand by for apple bobbing, sack races, tug-o'war, cowpat tossing and supervised tree climbing sessions.

Food stalls will be selling a selection of delicious country fare over the weekend to wash down with craft beers and outstanding wines. Plus there'll be live music, famous faces and giveaways running throughout the event.

Don't miss the spectacular ‘Running of the Wools' in Feilding the day before the Games. Another free event, this features hundreds of sheep herding through the town centre and coincides with the famous livestock sales and Feilding Farmers Market.

There are two events on Manchester Street before the sheep are let loose - an exciting wool fadge teams race and the Mitre 10 Man and Mutt Race featuring local Young Farmers sprinting in gumboots with their dogs.

The Hilux New Zealand Rural Games are sponsored by Toyota, Fonterra, Husqvarna, Line 7, Mitre 10 and Norwood with major support from the New Zealand Racing Board and Simpson Grierson plus Palmerston North City Council and Manawatu District Council.
