Picton is an idyllic harbour town at the top of New Zealand's South Island and a great place to stopover for a couple of nights on your way between islands. Picton is also the gateway to exploring the Marlborough Sounds, which are peppered with small inlets and bays that are home to some excellent holiday hideaways.
Food & Drink
As you would imagine, set in the heart of New Zealand's premier wine making region and on the pure waters of the Queen Charlotte Sound, Picton is home to some pretty good restaurants. So make sure you give yourself an afternoon off to enjoy a bottle of wine and some fresh seafood!
Whether you are after some travel essentials, fishing or sailing gear, or authentic New Zealand giftware, Picton's town centre offers it all. So spare yourself sometime to have a wander round the streets of this quaint little town.
Fun on the Water
Of course, with its own huge harbour and pure, calm, waters, Picton is a haven for all sort of water based activities. You can choose from sailing, fishing, a cruise around the Sounds, kayaking, water skiing and scuba diving. Find out more on the official Picton website
Blenheim Wine Tasting
Just half an hour's drive from Picton is Blenheim and the heartland of New Zealand's premier wine region. From Picton you can either drive, catch a taxi to a favourite winemaker, or take a guided tour around several wineries on a full wine-tasting. A vineyard lunch makes for a particularly relaxing afternoon!
With its smooth waters, Picton is a particularly good place to have a novelty ride on a sea-plane. And, if you thought the ride through the sounds on the ferry was scenic, then the view from the front of a plane at low altitude is truly spectacular!
