Baggage

When travelling on foot, you will need to ensure your luggage fits within our baggage allowances. If you’re travelling with a vehicle you may carry as much luggage as you want, inside your vehicle.

Luggage allowances

Carry on:  One small bag and one handbag or laptop bag. 

Check-in: Two items of luggage per person.

Maximum weight: 23kg per bag.

Maximum size: 200 linear centimetres*.

Excess luggage: $20 per item (see below). 

(*linear size is calculated by adding height + length + width of the bag together) 

Check-in items

  • All large bags and suitcases must be checked in.
  • This includes wheeled cabin bags and backpacks.
  • You may check in two bags as standard.

Additional bags

  • Extra bags can be added at $20 per item if they are:
  • Maximum weight: 23kgs per bag.

  • Maximum size 200 linear centimetres*.
    (*linear size is calculated by adding height + length + width of the bag together).

Small musical instruments can be taken onboard as hand luggage.

Large musical instruments, weighing more than 7kg or classed as oversized, will need to be checked in.

 

Bulky sporting equipment that exceed our standard baggage allowance can also be booked separately.

Maximum weight limit: 23kg.

Items like: 

  • Surfboards

  • Golf clubs

  • Cricket bags

  • Kit bags

 

 

  • Must be able to be pushed on board. 
  • One bike per person. 
  • The owner of the bike must be available to walk the bike onboard.
  • Our terminal team will give you guidance on this at check-in. 
  • No bikes in boxes or bags over 23kg – no exceptions. 
  • All of our ships have bicycle racks in the vehicle decks.
  • Rack space is limited, so we recommend booking in advance.  
  • Bring a lock.

  • Must be on wheels. 
  • One item walked on per person.

  • Small animals in cages (that fit within our standard luggage requirements) are still accepted.
  • They must have water and will sit in front of the luggage truck.
  • No puppies or dogs are permitted to travel in our luggage truck.
  • Dogs and puppies must be booked in a kennel (see Travelling with pets).

Luggage handling

  • Customers must not load or unload their own luggage from our trucks. 
  • We only carry personal luggage and sporting equipment. 
  • You must contact a courier service if you need to transport household goods, machinery, or transport items unattended. 
  • We do not offer an unaccompanied vehicle service.

Noddies (small luggage trailer): 
  • Sorry, we no longer allow these due to operational constraints.

 

Connecting with the Coastal Pacific? 
  • Let our check-in staff in Wellington know that you are connecting directly to the Coastal Pacific train in Picton and we'll transfer your bags for you. 
  • However, you will still need to check-in for the Coastal Pacific at the GJNZ check-in at the Interislander terminal in Picton
  • Please ensure your luggage complies with the Coastal Pacific luggage allowance.
