Interislander winter timetable: What you need to know

This winter, Interislander will be operating a temporary one ship timetable while our vessels Kaiārahi and Kaitaki complete scheduled maintenance.

This essential work ensures our ferries remain safe, reliable and ready to serve New Zealand in the years ahead, while we prepare for the arrival of new ferries in 2029.

When is this happening?

From 22 June to mid-September 2026, Interislander will operate a one ship timetable while Kaiārahi undergoes routine wet dock maintenance in Wellington and Kaitaki heads to Singapore for its required hull inspection and maintenance.

This maintenance has been scheduled during the lower demand winter period to help minimise disruption for customers.

What does the timetable look like?

During this period, services will operate four sailings each day:

  • 3:30am – Wellington to Picton
  • 9:30am – Picton to Wellington
  • 3:30pm – Wellington to Picton
  • 9:30pm – Picton to Wellington

Will this affect my travel?

Most passengers will still be able to travel as planned.

However, with fewer sailings available each day, we recommend:

•    Booking early to secure your preferred sailing
•    Being flexible where possible with travel times

If you’re able to travel without a vehicle, you may find it easier to secure a sailing, with great value foot passenger fares available as part of our Leave the car behind this winter offer.

What happens if weather or unexpected issues occur?

As always, safety comes first. If severe weather or unforeseen issues affect sailings, we will:

  • Rebook customers on the next available departure
  • Add additional sailings where possible once conditions improve

We also have contingency plans in place should the operating vessel experience any unexpected issues.

Accessibility:

  • If you have accessibility needs, let the crew know at check-in.
  • They’ll provide a tag so you can park close to the lift on the ferry, and you’re welcome to remain in your wheelchair during the sailing.

Plan ahead for winter travel

The Interislander winter timetable helps ensure our ferries continue to serve Aotearoa New Zealand safely and reliably, now and into the future.

Book early and travel with confidence this winter.
