Kaitaki heading to dry dock in Singapore

Interislander ferry Kaitaki is heading to Singapore for scheduled dry dock maintenance.

It will depart Wellington in early August for its 14-day journey, stopping in Gladstone on the Queensland Coast to refuel. Kaitaki is due back in early October.

While it is away, Aratere and Kaiārahi will both be sailing across Cook Strait.

Interislander Executive General Manager Duncan Roy says this dry dock completes the big three-part planned maintenance schedule for the Interislander fleet this year.

“Dry docks allow for vessels to be inspected out of the water and for comprehensive maintenance to be carried out. They are an important part of ensuring the ferries are kept up to standard.

“Work on Kaitaki will include hull and coating repairs and a refresh of some of the public areas on board”.

Interislander’s rail-capable ferry Aratere had a maintenance wet dock in Wellington in May and Kaiārahi underwent a month long wet dock service in Picton through to early July.

A report from International Maritime Assessors Det Norske Veritas (DNV) into extending the life of the Interislander fleet found the ships to be in a good state, with the hulls of all three ships in particularly good condition for their age. Read a summary of the report
