Interislander’s onboard crew has undergone expert barista training as part of a new partnership with L’affare, the pioneer of New Zealand’s celebrated café and coffee culture.

The training took place in Newtown, Te Whanganui a Tara Wellington with 60 crew.

“While many of our crew members were already barista trained, they all took the opportunity to learn tips and tricks on how to expertly brew L’affare coffee so they can continue to provide top-tier customer service onboard,” says Food and Beverage Manager Olly Edwards.

L’affare was selected as Interislander’s new coffee partner not only because they make a great roast, but because they support Interislander’s commitment to actively procuring ethical ingredients.

“We’re in the process of switching to local produce and sourcing ethical ingredients wherever we can,” says Olly. “It's all part of our wider sustainability journey, and I’m proud we are serving such a quality local coffee onboard.”

The long-standing Wellington coffee business supports Fair Trade and partners with Trade Aid and the World Fair Trade Organisation to improve conditions for producers and their local communities in coffee-growing countries worldwide.

L’affare has been Toitu Enviromark Gold certified since 2010 and is working towards becoming carbon neutral by 2030 and zero waste to landfill certified by 2025.

Their retail packaging has transitioned to soft plastics, which can be recycled through the NZ Soft Plastics Recycling Scheme, and they are launching 5kg metal coffee canisters for wholesale deliveries and storage in central Wellington, reducing single-use packaging.

Organic food waste from the roastery is either composted through daily collection or donated to The Freestore.

That’s a lot of goodness in your Interislander coffee.
