Cook Strait winds, swells and smooth sailing
Cook Strait is part of the magic of travelling through Aotearoa New Zealand. It is dramatic, beautiful, and often talked about when the weather starts making headlines.
How the Strait behaves
Crossing Cook Strait makes up just a third of Interislander journey, and it responds differently depending on wind direction, not just wind strength.
Southerly winds can generate long, rolling swells that travel up from the Southern Ocean. These conditions are more likely to create noticeable movement onboard, particularly side-to-side motion (not so good for the sea-sick among us).
Northerly winds tell a different story.
Even during storms, northerlies usually create short, steep waves. While the sea can look choppy from shore, our vessels are large enough to cut through these waves cleanly, which often makes the crossing quite smooth.
Safety comes first
We only sail when it is safe to do so. If conditions exceed our vessel limits, sailings may be delayed or cancelled. Safety always takes priority over schedule.
We'll give you plenty of warning if there are moderate to large swells forecast during your sailing.
Every sailing is guided by our robust Safety Management System. We follow a strict safety management system that meets the International Safety Management Code. It’s independently checked by Maritime NZ and international experts, and supported by regular maintenance, clear decision-to-sail processes, and ongoing improvements.
Comfort onboard
If you are prone to seasickness, a few small choices can help you feel more settled during your crossing.
- Sit midship where movement is least noticeable
- Step outside for fresh air and wide-open views (if it’s safe - please check with our crew before heading outside, as some exterior areas may be closed during adverse weather)
- Keep hydrated and avoid heavy meals before sailing
- Look toward the horizon or relax in one of our lounges
- Talk to our friendly crew if you need advice or support
Our ships are designed with comfort in mind, giving you space to move, rest, and enjoy the journey.
More than a crossing
The Cook Strait is not just something to get through. It is part of the experience.
It is a journey that connects people, places, and islands and one worth enjoying every step of the way.
